Samsung’s new foldable display technology is harder to damage and resists creases

Engadget · 3 hours ago

Samsung has unveiled a new foldable display technology called Flex Titanium, which it says is tougher and shows a less visible crease than earlier versions. The upgrade matters because durability and the screen fold line have been two of the main drawbacks of foldable phones, and Samsung appears to be positioning this as a major improvement ahead of its next product launch. The company is expected to introduce the new display in its next Galaxy foldables at its Unpacked event on 22 July.

The new design adds two main components beneath the OLED panel: a titanium alloy film said to increase mechanical stiffness by 20 times, and a titanium plate that supports the screen while still allowing repeated folding. Samsung says the plate uses advanced hole-processing to remove air gaps between the display module and adhesive, while micro-patterned holes in the folding area help balance flexibility with durability. The technology is described as the result of seven generations of foldable development, and early signs from CES demonstrations and a leaked video suggest the crease may be far less noticeable on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8.

  • Samsung says its new foldable screen is tougher and less creased.
  • Flex Titanium may debut in Galaxy foldables on 22 July.
  • Titanium layers are central to the claimed durability gains.
