A veteran San Francisco firefighter, Gabriel Shin, has been awarded a $6 million settlement after being physically attacked by a colleague with a wrench in February 2022. Following the assault, Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson dismissed Shin's complaints as those of a "drama queen", and Shin subsequently filed a lawsuit against the City and County of San Francisco. The settlement, approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, highlights serious workplace misconduct and allegations of institutional negligence.

Shin was attacked outside his Oakland home by fellow firefighter Robert Muhammad, suffering a broken left arm, swollen right arm and concussion. Court documents revealed that Muhammad had used a superior colleague's password to locate Shin's address in the department's database. Muhammad had displayed aggression towards colleagues and superiors for over a decade in a pattern that went undocumented and unaddressed. Shin alleges the department retaliated against him after filing the lawsuit, including cutting his health insurance and stopping his pay, whilst Muhammad was placed on paid leave with a comfortable schedule at a training facility. Department leadership declined his request for a workplace restraining order and discouraged him from pressing criminal charges.
