Sandra Bullock Reveals “Pretty Dark” Period Amid Partner Bryan Randall’s Private Battle With ALS

The Hollywood Reporter · 1 hour ago

Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the emotional toll of keeping her late partner Bryan Randall's battle with ALS private, describing it as a "pretty dark" period of her life. Randall, a photographer, died in 2023 aged 57 without ever having disclosed his diagnosis, and his family later said he had chosen to keep his illness private. Bullock's remarks, made on the SmartLess podcast, shed light on the personal cost of honouring that request while also navigating caregiving, the COVID-19 pandemic and raising two young children.

Bullock said Randall explicitly asked her not to tell anyone, and that for a long time only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew about his condition. She described coordinating his care and pursuing experimental treatments largely alone, while shielding even close friends such as Amanda Anka and Jennifer Aniston, whom she eventually confided in. She also revealed she began grieving Randall emotionally around four years before his death, saying he had changed profoundly "both physically and mentally" long before he passed, and that she only processed the loss fully afterwards.
