Deadline previews an eclectic Labour Day specialty box office weekend, headlined by a documentary on singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles timed to her new album, A24's wide slasher release "Onslaught," and the strong US expansion of Chinese box-office hit "Dear You." The mix reflects the traditional end-of-summer scramble among independent and specialty distributors to capture audiences with a varied slate spanning music documentary, horror, animation and foreign-language drama.

"Sara Bareilles: Good Grief," directed by Josh Alexander, opens one-week runs in New York and Los Angeles after a Wednesday preview across 116 theatres grossed $132,000, with screen counts nearly tripling after 90% of tickets sold out quickly; the film features Bareilles's collaborators and has P!NK, Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle among its executive producers. A24's "Onslaught," directed by Adam Wingard and starring Adria Arjona, Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens, expands to 1,900 screens, while GKids' animated "Cocoon — One Summer Of Girlhood" bows on 250 screens and Well Go USA's "Dear You," which has grossed $265 million in China, opens on 160 US screens. Other titles in play include Roadside Attractions' "Buddy," expanding to 1,771 screens, and Joe Swanberg's "The Sun Never Sets" starring Dakota Fanning, growing to 375 screens.
