Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has warned that businesses relying entirely on a single proprietary AI provider risk their long-term survival, reinforcing comments he made earlier in July. Speaking on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, he argued that companies handing over all their data, prompts and workflows to one AI lab are effectively "outsourcing their thinking", leaving them vulnerable if that provider changes terms, raises prices, or even builds a competing product using insights gleaned from their usage.

Nadella called for firms to retain the metadata generated whenever they use an AI model, so they can eventually train their own weights or open models, and urged businesses to separate "harnesses" such as coding tools from the underlying model and to use AI gateways to keep prompts independent of any single provider. He singled out proprietary coding assistants like Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's ChatGPT Codex as areas where companies should avoid over-reliance. The comments are notably self-serving, given Microsoft is a major investor in both OpenAI and Anthropic while also selling the kind of alternative AI infrastructure Nadella recommends, though the underlying concern echoes wider startup-industry fears about AI labs copying and competing with their own customers.
