The Saudi Pro League club Al-Taawoun have been fined and ordered to play two home matches behind closed doors after their supporters chanted the name of the late Diogo Jota during a league fixture. The chants, audible during Saturday's match against Al-Hilal, prompted Rúben Neves, a former Wolves and Portugal teammate of Jota's, to gesture towards the sky in tribute. The Saudi Football Federation ruled the chants breached its disciplinary and ethics regulations, imposing a harsher penalty under the relevant rule.

Al-Taawoun were fined 100,000 riyals (around £19,800) and must play their next two home league games without spectators. Jota, who played for Liverpool and Portugal, died in July 2025 alongside his brother André Silva in a car crash in Spain, and Neves was among the pallbearers at his funeral. Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for rivals Al-Nassr and was a Portugal teammate of Jota's, had called for the fans involved to receive lifetime stadium bans.
