Prime Video has released a first look at Season 3 of The Rings of Power showing Sauron confronting the Balrog, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con. Notably, the Balrog speaks for the first time in the franchise, voiced by Simon Pegg, marking a significant departure from Tolkien's original texts where Balrogs are never shown speaking.

In the footage, the Balrog attacks Sauron with its flaming sword, but Sauron blocks the blow using the Iron Crown of Morgoth, an item not held by Sauron in Tolkien's lore. The Balrog is described as an "intelligent, dangerous adversary" that Sauron seeks out for power to forge the One Ring, with a teased line of dialogue reading "Crawl back to your world above." It remains unclear whether this is the same Balrog awakened beneath the Misty Mountains in Season 2, and Charlie Vickers is set to reprise his role as Sauron.
