## Key points

- Ilhan Omar is projected to win a fifth term in Minnesota.
- Federal investigations into her immigration paperwork and disclosures continue.
- Omar denies wrongdoing and has not been charged.

## Summary

Ilhan Omar has been projected to win a fifth term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, defeating Republican John Nagel despite federal investigations that have drawn attention during the campaign. The result matters because the probes, including questions about her immigration paperwork and financial disclosures, could continue after the election.

Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home on 12 October and reportedly seized her phone, passport and computer, as well as obtaining her DNA. Omar denies wrongdoing, has not been charged, and says the claims are a politically motivated attack; her spokesperson has called the allegations a smear. A related investigation began in 2016 and was closed in 2021, according to a source cited in the article.
