A new photography book, *Working Dogs: Through the Lens of Love and Duty* by John Fabiano, published by Smith Street Books, showcases dogs performing specialised roles around the world, from herding livestock to rescuing avalanche victims. The Guardian gallery features a selection of these images alongside Fabiano's first-hand accounts of the months he spent travelling to photograph the animals at work, highlighting the range of skills and temperaments bred into different working dogs.

The featured breeds include kelpies and border collies herding sheep and cattle on Australian farms, Greenlandic sled dogs fed around their running schedules on walrus meat, and Hungarian komondors guarding geese from predators such as wild boar and hawks. Other subjects include Swiss avalanche rescue dogs trained near the Bernina Pass, a Kai Ken used in Japan to scare monkeys away from crops, an Italian lagotto Romagnolo trained to sniff out truffles, and a dog named Briggs who accompanies a lobster boat captain in Maine.
