New York Republican congressman Mike Lawler, one of the most vulnerable House Republicans facing re-election in a seat that backed Kamala Harris in 2024, has faced fresh scrutiny after a police report detailing his 2012 drink-driving arrest was made public. Lawler had already admitted to the arrest in a July interview, describing it as one of the worst decisions of his life, but the newly obtained report reveals harsher details than previously known, adding pressure to his tight re-election battle against Democrat Cait Conley.

The report, obtained by the New York Post, shows Lawler was driving 74mph in a 55mph zone, following too closely, crossing hazard markings and making unsafe lane changes without signalling. He recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.14, nearly double New York's legal limit of 0.08, and later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving with ability impaired. The revelations are notable given Lawler has since positioned himself as a prominent anti-drink-driving advocate in Congress, receiving a "Legislative Hero Award" from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2024 and co-sponsoring related legislation; his opponent Conley has so far focused her campaign on his legislative record rather than the decade-old arrest.
