The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy has reviewed the Schlage Sense Pro, a $399 smart lock that abandons the physical key in favour of ultra-wideband (UWB) hands-free unlocking, opening the door automatically as the owner approaches. It is Schlage's first lock to use UWB auto-unlock, its first to support Matter-over-Thread, and its first without a keyhole, earning a Verge score of 8 out of 10. The reviewer found UWB noticeably faster and more reliable than older hands-free systems based on geofencing, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, describing it as the first such system she actually trusts.

The lock currently works only with iPhones and Apple Watches via Apple Home Key, with Samsung and Google support expected later in 2026 through the Aliro standard, and hands-free use also requires an Apple Home hub. It comes in matte black or satin nickel, runs on four AA batteries rated for around six months on Wi-Fi or nine-plus months on Thread, and includes a USB-C port for emergency power. Schlage's UWB implementation, called Schlage Converge, tracks a user's distance, speed and angle of approach so the door only unlocks when someone genuinely walks up to it; in testing it rarely misfired, faltering only when the phone was in a back pocket or backpack. Downsides noted include the high price, the Apple-only launch, some Thread setup issues, and the lack of a keyway.
