## Key points

- Student and man killed in suspected relationship-linked attack near Berlin
- Police arrested a 19-year-old prime suspect
- School cancelled Friday classes and held a memorial

## Summary

An 18-year-old student and a 30-year-old man were killed after an attack at a private secondary school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, near Berlin. Police have arrested a 19-year-old German man described as the prime suspect, and say initial evidence suggests the incident was connected to a relationship rather than being random; the case has prompted renewed concern about violence against women and safety in schools.

Police were called at about 1.45pm on Thursday after reports of an attack at Docemus Privatschulen, where they found two people fatally injured. Reports say the man died while trying to help the student, though police have not confirmed the weapon used or whether the suspect attended the school; emergency services, including helicopters, attended, classes were cancelled for Friday, and a memorial was held that evening.
