## Key points

- Schumer faces resistance from some incoming Democratic senators.
- He needs a caucus majority to keep the leadership role.
- Chris Van Hollen has been suggested as an alternative.

## Summary

Chuck Schumer is seeking to retain his role leading Senate Democrats as the party prepares to take control of the chamber, but some newly elected senators want a change. The leadership contest matters because the incoming caucus will shape the party’s priorities and how it uses its expected majority.

Schumer has led Senate Democrats since 2017 and needs support from a majority of the caucus to remain leader. The article says Democrats hold 54 seats, with results in Mississippi and Alaska still pending; senators-elect Adam Hamilton and Troy Jackson have publicly said they would not back Schumer, while progressives have floated Chris Van Hollen as an alternative. Van Hollen has called for an open discussion on advancing an agenda focused on the economy.
