## Key points

- Schumer revived his mocked grill photo to celebrate Democrats’ Senate win.
- Democrats secured 54 seats, with two races still undecided.
- The victory may return Schumer to the majority leader role.

## Summary

Chuck Schumer celebrated Democrats’ midterm Senate gains by reviving a much-ridiculed grilling photo as a meme, showing Republicans who lost their races, Donald Trump and JD Vance on burgers and hot dogs. His caption said the Republicans were “finally cooked”, turning an old online joke into a victory taunt after the party secured control of the Senate.

The image recalled a Father’s Day 2024 post of Schumer grilling raw patties, including one with cheese already on it, which drew mockery and was later reused by a Republican campaign group. Democrats had flipped at least seven Republican-held seats and were set to hold 54 seats when the new Congress convenes on 3 January; two races remained unresolved. The win could restore Schumer as majority leader, though senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed had not said whether he would support him in the upcoming leadership vote.
