New Zealand's Whakaata Māori and Canada's APTN have announced an international co-production partnership on "Māui & Elvis," a sci-fi comedy adventure series for children and families that brings together Māori and Métis/Cree talent from both countries. The deal was unveiled at the World Indigenous Broadcasters Network (WIBN) Conference in Sápmi, Norway, and represents a step beyond typical content-sharing arrangements between Indigenous broadcasters into full creative collaboration.

The series follows two best friends, Māori character Māui from Aotearoa and Métis character Elvis from Canada, who try to save Māui's grandmother after she is possessed by a world-destroying alien. It is set mainly in New Zealand's South Island, with scenes also filmed in Vancouver, and will feature te reo Māori making up at least 30% of the dialogue, with Māori cultural values (tikanga Māori) woven throughout. Whakaata Māori and APTN, founded in 1999 as Canada's first national Indigenous broadcaster, are both members of WIBN, which was established in 2008 to foster collaboration among Indigenous broadcasters worldwide.
