Scott Free Productions Teams With Calliope Pictures For Documentary Feature ‘The Vesuvius Challenge’ Narrated By Guy Pearce

Deadline · 2 months ago

Ridley Scott's production company Scott Free Productions has partnered with Calliope Pictures and Infinite Films to create a feature documentary centred on computer scientist Brent Seales' decades-long mission to unlock the secrets of ancient Roman scrolls preserved by the Mount Vesuvius eruption. The film employs cutting-edge digital imaging and artificial intelligence to decode the carbonized documents that have remained inaccessible since antiquity, positioning the scientific endeavour as a compelling story of human determination and the pursuit of lost historical knowledge.

The project's development coincides with a major breakthrough announced by Seales' research team in Naples, who have successfully unwrapped and deciphered damaged Herculaneum scrolls including philosophical texts by Philodemus of Gadara. The documentary features narrator Guy Pearce and is helmed by executive producers including Ridley Scott himself, drawing on Calliope Pictures' established track record with acclaimed documentaries such as HBO's 'The Swamp' and the Netflix film 'Get Me Roger Stone.'
