Actor Sean Astin has revealed that the pay he received for playing Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy was so low that he was forced to sell his house during the height of the films' fame in the early 2000s. Speaking to The Guardian, Astin said there was a stark mismatch between the huge public attention he received and the modest money he was earning, despite the trilogy becoming a global phenomenon that grossed $2.9 billion worldwide between 2001 and 2003. This highlights how the film industry's pay structures did not always reflect a project's eventual box-office success.

Astin said he was paid around $75,000 per film, totalling roughly $250,000 for the whole trilogy, a figure he described as poorly negotiated at the time, though he says he is now financially comfortable. Because all three films were shot simultaneously, the cast had no chance to renegotiate salaries as each instalment proved successful, a point echoed by co-star Elijah Wood, who said the arrangement reflected the financial risk New Line Cinema took in making all three at once. Fellow cast member Orlando Bloom has previously said he earned just $175,000 for the trilogy. With the franchise now developing new films, including "The Hunt for Gollum" and a project co-written by Stephen Colbert, Astin said he would push hard for better pay if asked to return.
