Businessman Mike Minogue has won the Republican nomination for Massachusetts governor, beating former MBTA official Brian Shortsleeve in Tuesday's primary. He will now face Democratic incumbent Maura Healey, who is favoured to win a second term in a state where Republicans have historically fared better in gubernatorial races than in other contests, despite continuous Democratic control of its congressional seats since 1996.

Minogue, a former GE Healthcare executive who went on to lead Danvers-based Abiomed, campaigned heavily on his business record and was self-funded, putting in roughly $7 million of the more than $7.5 million he raised in the first quarter, compared with about $646,500 raised by Shortsleeve. He secured 70% support at the state GOP convention, drew a notable endorsement from investor Kevin O'Leary, and was targeted by a late Healey campaign advert branding him "MAGA Mike". Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll were both renominated unopposed, and Republicans are not fielding candidates in roughly half the state's congressional districts or in several other races, underscoring the scale of the challenge facing Minogue in November.
