## Key points

- Democrats demand details of military testosterone-testing proposal
- Screening would cover troops over 30 annually
- Senators question evidence, costs and effects on women

## Summary

Senate Democrats have asked Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to explain how the Pentagon will implement a proposed programme to test service members’ testosterone levels. They say the department has provided too little information about the policy’s medical evidence, cost and potential effects, including on female personnel and readiness.

The plan would require annual testosterone screening for troops aged over 30 and offer testosterone-replacement treatment to men found to have low levels. The letter was signed by Senators Richard Blumenthal, Mazie Hirono, Gary Peters, Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego, who also raised concerns that the initiative could encourage unsafe self-medication and receive priority over unmet health needs affecting women.
