Several injured after sword attack at Swedish school
Several people were injured in a sword attack at Brinell School, a high school in Fagersta, central Sweden, on Friday afternoon. Police arrested one man in connection with the incident, with some Swedish media reports suggesting the suspect was shot in the leg by officers; authorities say there is currently no danger to the public. The attack has prompted a significant security response, including lockdowns at multiple nearby schools, and comes amid a series of violent incidents at Swedish educational institutions in recent years.
Police were called to the scene just after 14:00 local time (13:00 BST), and Fagersta council said officers were searching the school building while eight other schools in the area were placed under lockdown. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it a "serious incident" and said police were working intensively to establish a motive. The incident follows Sweden's worst-ever mass shooting in 2025, which killed 11 people at an Örebro adult education centre, as well as a fatal knife attack on two teachers in Malmö in 2022 and a fatal sword attack in Trollhättan in 2015.
