Anthony Woolford, 76, has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment at Guildford Crown Court for rape, indecent assault, and possession of indecent images following offences committed nearly four decades ago. His victim, whom he groomed and abused as a teenage pupil during his time as a teacher in the late 1980s, came forward and testified against him, leading to his conviction. The case highlights the long-term impact of historical sexual abuse and the significance of survivors finding the courage to pursue justice years after such crimes occur.

The abuser manipulated his victim into sexual activity in school cupboards and during weekend outings, during which he photographed her. Indecent images were discovered during a 2018 investigation; the victim identified herself within them five years later in 2023. Woolford denied all allegations throughout his trial, even claiming not to know the woman. The victim described profound psychological effects including dependence on alcohol and cigarettes, persistent hypervigilance, and fear, whilst also acknowledging that justice has brought some catharsis. Police assessed Woolford as posing an unmanageable risk to the community with a high likelihood of reoffence.
