Shades of Keane and Gerrard in Bellingham display – Rooney

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Wayne Rooney has compared Jude Bellingham's performance in England's 3-2 World Cup last-16 win over Mexico to celebrated Champions League displays by Steven Gerrard and Roy Keane. The 23-year-old midfielder scored twice in 98 seconds as Thomas Tuchel's side, reduced to 10 men, edged an epic contest at the Azteca to set up a quarter-final against Norway, keeping alive England's hopes of a first major trophy since 1966.

Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney likened Bellingham to Gerrard in Liverpool's 2005 comeback against AC Milan and Keane's inspired showing against Juventus in 1999, praising the Real Madrid player's desire, work rate and timing. He also highlighted a last-ditch tackle that denied Cesar Montes a goal on the stroke of half-time, and awarded Bellingham a "10 out of 10" given the difficult circumstances of the match.
