Hofesh Shechter’s In the Brain is reviewed as a compelling, atmospheric work that channels the communal release of rave culture without simply becoming a party. Although it does not substantially expand on Shechter’s established style, the energy and commitment of the young Shechter II dancers make it an absorbing celebration of movement, rhythm and ritual.

Developed from Cave, a 2022 work for the Martha Graham Dance Company, the piece is performed by international dancers aged under 25. Shechter’s dark, beat-led score, supplemented by music from German techno duo Âme, combines with Tom Visser’s subdued lighting to create a subterranean mood; quieter passages and brief stylistic detours temper its slow-building intensity.
