Sheffield’s futuristic delivery robots scrapped from city’s streets after just five months

The Star (Sheffield) · 2 hours ago

Starship Technologies has halted its autonomous delivery robot service in Sheffield following a five-month pilot that commenced in March 2026. The small six-wheeled vehicles, which delivered food through Uber Eats across areas including Meersbrook, have been withdrawn from operation whilst the company reviews the trial's results and commercial viability.

The company characterised the service suspension as a planned commercial decision rather than a response to isolated vandalism incidents, where robots were spray-painted with anti-technology messages and had visibility fixtures damaged. Starship indicated that Sheffield remains a candidate for future autonomous delivery operations as it continues assessing potential deployment sites across the UK, leaving open the possibility of the robots' eventual return to the city.
