Sheila Mathews, a pioneering performer and presenter who became one of ITV's first stars when the channel launched in 1955, has died aged 99. She began her career as a West End musical theatre performer as a child in 1930 and went on to a long career spanning variety, revue, cabaret and soap opera, before being recognised by Equity in 2017, at the age of 90, as Britain's longest-running performer.

Mathews made her stage debut aged three and later danced alongside a young Eric Bartholomew, who became Eric Morecambe, before performing at the London Palladium with Tommy Trinder and Frankie Howerd. She featured in ITV's opening night programming in 1955 and hosted her own show, Friday's Girl, before working across regional variety programmes and West End productions including Charlie Girl and Applause, in the latter understudying Lauren Bacall. She later moved into straight acting, notably playing Laura Marshall in the ITV soap Crossroads in 1974.
