David Burke, the actor best known for portraying Dr Watson in the 1980s television series Sherlock Holmes opposite Jeremy Brett, has died aged 91, with his estate valued at £77,912 following probate. The Liverpool-born performer, who also appeared in Coronation Street, Heartbeat and numerous other television dramas across a five-decade career, left his entire estate to his wife of 55 years, fellow actress Anna Calder-Marshall.

Burke initially trained at Oxford University reading classics before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and went on to build an acclaimed career spanning theatre, stage and television. He was widowed by none of his contemporaries and is survived by his wife Anna, aged 79, and their son Tom, 45, also an actor. Notably, Burke declined to return for a second series of Sherlock Holmes in 1985 because he felt guilty about spending time away from his family whilst filming in Manchester, prioritising fatherhood over career advancement. His portrayal of Watson is credited with transforming the character from comic relief into Sherlock's respected ally, influencing subsequent interpretations including Martin Freeman's version in the BBC's modern Sherlock adaptation.
