Shirley MacLaine, 92, appeared in a rare video message recorded for the Southampton Playhouse ahead of its upcoming screening of Bob Fosse's 1969 musical film "Sweet Charity", in which she starred. In the clip, she wryly acknowledged that the film had been a box office failure, joking with viewers to "remember how hard we worked" despite it "not doing very well" commercially.

"Sweet Charity" marked Fosse's directorial debut and also featured Sammy Davis Jr., Chita Rivera, John McMartin, Paula Kelly and Ricardo Montalban; Fosse went on to greater commercial success with later films such as "Cabaret" and "All That Jazz". MacLaine, an Oscar winner for "Terms of Endearment" (1984) with five further nominations, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame ceremony in December 2025, and is set to star alongside Ansel Elgort in the upcoming road trip comedy "Lucy Boomer".
