Shock as fit and healthy Colorado mayor, 45, suddenly dies while on hiking trip

Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

Joe Anderson, the 45-year-old Mayor Pro Tem of Englewood, Colorado, died on Friday morning after suddenly losing consciousness while hiking on Quandary Peak, despite having no known health problems. City officials and colleagues paid tribute to him as a devoted public servant who had championed causes including homelessness support and disability access, and his death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the community he served.

Anderson lost consciousness and stopped breathing at around 6.40am, prompting nearby hikers to begin CPR before Summit County Sheriff's deputies and medical personnel took over efforts to revive him; he was pronounced dead at the scene. First elected to Englewood City Council in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, he was known for co-founding the nonprofit Change the Trend and running a Neighborhood Rehab Project for elderly and disabled residents. He is survived by his wife, Becca, and their two children, for whom an online fundraiser has already raised almost $67,000.
