## Key points

- Fernandes’ criticism of Carrick has prompted calls for him to be dropped.
- Opinions differ over whether the comments undermined the manager.
- Carrick must decide whether Fernandes keeps his place and captaincy.

## Summary

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has become the focus of debate over whether head coach Michael Carrick should drop him for Sunday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth. The discussion follows Fernandes’ criticism of Carrick’s tactics after United’s 4-1 defeat by Como, raising questions about authority and trust within the squad.

Former striker Duncan Ferguson and fan channel host Joe Smith say Fernandes should be left out, while Wayne Rooney has warned that disputes between players and the manager could unsettle the dressing room. Fernandes, 32, was substituted after 67 minutes in Como and remains captain despite the controversy; Carrick is due to discuss team selection at a news conference. Some at the club reportedly view Fernandes’ remarks as unprofessional, while others note he gave numerous post-match interviews and sounded less inflammatory in person than in print.
