Showrunner Mara Brock Akil’s Writers’ Colony Announces Cohorts for 2026 Summer and Fall Residencies

Variety · 2 hours ago

Showrunner Mara Brock Akil has announced the summer and fall 2026 cohorts for her Writers' Colony, a three-month screenwriting residency based in the West Adams neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Programming for the summer session began on 10 June, with the fall session set to start on 2 September. The initiative aims to support emerging screenwriters as they develop their craft and prepare for careers in the entertainment industry.

Each cohort comprises four emerging writers who workshop scripts, build professional relationships and pitch ideas to fellow writers, alongside conversations with industry professionals. The summer cohort features Nicole Schwegman, Spencer Jamison, Nagee Brown and Justin Casselle, while the fall cohort includes Charlie T. Savage, Malia Dawkins Jennings, Leland Hall and Shay Ball. The Colony is located next door to Brock Akil's story27 Productions, and its founder — whose credits include "Girlfriends," "The Game," "Being Mary Jane" and the current Netflix series "Forever" — said supporting the next generation of storytellers remains central to the programme.
