Detroit rapper Skilla Baby says surviving a drive-by shooting in May 2025 reshaped his debut album, The Price of Fame, and renewed his enthusiasm for music. The attack left him needing several operations, while the experience gave the project greater emotional weight and prompted him to reflect more deeply on life, faith and recovery.

The album draws on influential hip-hop records and particularly 2Pac, including cover art referencing a famous post-shooting photograph and a song inspired by “Dear Mama”. Skilla Baby has also gained support from 50 Cent, who advised him and helped secure an acting role in Power: Origins, and Nas, who features on “Respect My Gangsta”; his tour begins in New York on 21 October.

  • A shooting transformed Skilla Baby’s debut album.
  • 50 Cent and Nas became important mentors.
  • The Price of Fame tour starts on 21 October.
