Sleep mode vs. shutdown: Which is better to use daily for your MacBook?

Engadget · 1 hour ago

Sleep is generally the most convenient option for daily use, as it preserves the current session and lets a MacBook resume quickly when reopened. Shutdown closes applications, ends macOS, clears RAM and stops power consumption entirely, making it more suitable when the computer will not be used for an extended period or when a complete power cycle is needed for troubleshooting.

A sleeping Mac uses very little battery—typically less than 1% per hour on newer Apple silicon models—and may continue limited background tasks such as email, calendar synchronisation and Find My updates. If the battery becomes critically low, macOS saves the session to disk before shutting down; unusually high sleep drain can be caused by connected accessories or active applications. Users should allow shutdown to finish before closing the lid, while forced shutdowns should be reserved for an unresponsive system because unsaved work may be lost.

  • Sleep is best for ordinary breaks and quick resumption.
  • Shutdown uses no power and helps with full troubleshooting.
  • Sleep usually consumes less than 1% battery per hour.
