## Key points

- A Warburtons lorry overturned on the A1 near Durham.
- Bread across both carriageways forced closures and lengthy delays.
- The driver went to hospital; repairs kept part of the road closed.

## Summary

A Warburtons lorry overturned on the A1 near Bowburn, south of Durham, scattering bread across both carriageways and forcing the road to close in both directions. The crash caused severe delays, while the driver was taken to hospital; his condition was not known.

The incident happened shortly after 5am on Wednesday, near junctions 60 and 61. National Highways crews cleared a large debris field and used a crane to remove the lorry, but the A1 remained closed into the afternoon as the central reservation was repaired. A second lorry carrying baked goods was reported to have crashed on the A66 near Bowes later that morning.
