Smart glasses without a camera? Even Realities bets productivity beats recording everyone

TechCrunch · 1 month ago

Even Realities has launched the G2, its second pair of smart glasses, deliberately omitting cameras and speakers in favour of a productivity-focused, monochrome heads-up display. The approach sets the company apart from rivals such as Meta, positioning the glasses as a discreet tool for meetings, presentations and travel rather than a device for recording others, so bystanders need not worry about being filmed. As with most smart glasses, however, functionality leans heavily on phone connectivity, which the reviewer initially found unreliable and frustrating before app updates improved it.

The G2 improves on the earlier G1 with a brighter 1,200-nit display (up from 1,000), four microphones instead of two, a 75% larger display area and a smoother 60Hz refresh rate (versus 20Hz). Weighing just 35 grams, the glasses use a magnesium-alloy frame and titanium-alloy temples, offer UV-protected lenses, and are claimed to last up to two days per charge, with a bulky case providing up to seven further recharges. Controls on the stem give access to a dashboard and features including Translate, Conversate, Teleprompt, Navigate, a to-do list and phone notifications; the reviewer found the translation feature useful at a show in China, though notification pop-ups proved inconsistent.

  • Even Realities' G2 smart glasses skip cameras to prioritise productivity over recording.
  • Upgrades include a brighter, larger display, four mics and 60Hz refresh.
  • Features rely on sometimes-unreliable phone connectivity, now improved via updates.
