## Key points

- Maurice McCabe says little has changed for Garda whistleblowers.
- He urges the Government to listen to and support them.
- A dispute over disclosures follows warnings about faulty gun holsters.

## Summary

Former Garda Maurice McCabe says the State’s treatment of Garda whistleblowers has not improved since he was publicly smeared after reporting alleged wrongdoing. He urged the Government to listen to and support current whistleblowers, saying the experience has affected him throughout his life.

His comments follow controversy over former justice minister Helen McEntee’s handling of protected disclosures, including one from Superintendent Brian O’Reilly about allegedly defective gun holsters. A Garda warned in 2019 that some holsters could allow firearms to be seized or discharged accidentally; in June 2020, one officer was badly injured when his gun fired accidentally, and Detective Garda Colm Horkan was later shot dead with his own weapon. Both officers were wearing the holsters, and O’Reilly disputes ministers’ account of how his whistleblower status became known.
