## Key points

- Soldier killed four people in Crimea shooting spree
- Victims included one serviceman and three elderly civilians
- Attacker detained; motive still under investigation

## Summary

A soldier in Russian-occupied Crimea killed four people in a shooting rampage before being detained, according to the Moscow-installed regional governor Mikhail Razvozhayev. The gunman first opened fire on fellow servicemen, killing one and wounding another, before turning his weapon on civilians in the village of Khmelnytske, raising fresh questions about discipline within Russian forces on the annexed peninsula.

The attacker killed three civilians in Khmelnytske — two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64-year-old woman — in addition to the serviceman he shot dead, with three further people injured. He has not been publicly named and officials have not disclosed which branch of the armed forces he served in; Razvozhayev said his motive remained under investigation and urged the public not to spread unverified rumours. Russia has controlled Crimea since annexing it in 2014, a move most of the international community regards as an illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory.
