Sonic boss admits “keeping momentum in such a competitive market is always a challenge,” but teases more “in store” across the series’ “different pillars”
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says Sega is finding it difficult to maintain the franchise’s momentum in a highly competitive games market, but has indicated that further Sonic projects are planned. His comments suggest Sega intends to keep supporting several forms of the series rather than focusing solely on a new mainline release.
Iizuka described 2D games, 3D games, spin-offs and collaborations as separate but meaningful “pillars” of Sonic. Although 2026 is the first year without a new Sonic release since 2018, Sega plans a second season of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC, including Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion collaborations; fans are also awaiting a successor to 2022’s Sonic Frontiers.
