‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Creator Kurt Sutter Endorses Charlie Hunnam’s FX Series ‘Legends’ That Reunites Cast Of Biker Drama: “I Think You’ll Dig It”

Deadline · 2 hours ago

"Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter has publicly given his blessing to "Legends", a new FX limited series developed by and starring Charlie Hunnam that reunites much of the biker drama's cast in a meta storyline. In an Instagram video, Sutter clarified he has no creative involvement in the project but stressed he was consulted early and fully supports it, easing any concern that the reunion project might be contentious given his own fraught departure from the SoA spin-off "Mayans M.C." in 2019.

Sutter explained that Hunnam approached him during the pitching process to seek his blessing, aware that the original show's intellectual property likely could not be directly used. "Legends" reimagines the SoA ensemble — including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal (Sutter's wife), Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Ross — playing themselves as they reunite at a fan convention and face a real-world threat, drawing comparisons to "Galaxy Quest". Sutter said he had seen the script and praised it as "well done", also offering warm words for FX boss John Landgraf despite past tensions. The series, produced by FX Productions and 20th Television with Jonathan Groff as showrunner, will stream on FX and Hulu.

Sons of Anarchy ran on FX from 2008 to 2014, following a fictional outlaw motorcycle club in California, and became one of the network's biggest hits under creator Kurt Sutter. Charlie Hunnam played the lead role, alongside cast members including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Tommy Flanagan and Kim Coates. Sutter also created the spin-off Mayans M.C., which he left in 2019 following disagreements with the studio.

Legends is a new limited series for FX, developed by and starring Hunnam, that brings much of the Sons of Anarchy cast back together, though playing versions of themselves rather than their original characters. Given Sutter's rocky exit from the franchise's previous spin-off, there was some question over whether he supported this new project or had any involvement in it.

FX is a US cable network known for scripted dramas, and its shows are typically also made available on the streaming service Hulu. Sutter's public comments matter to fans because he is closely associated with the original show's identity and legacy, even though Legends is being made without him as a writer or producer.
