FX greenlights Sons of Anarchy limited series with cast playing themselves
Developing story first seen 2 hours ago
FX has confirmed further details of Legends, its meta-thriller Sons of Anarchy spinoff, revealing that the project was developed by Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn also serving as executive producers; original series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved. FX Productions and 20th Television will make the limited series, which will stream on FX and Hulu, with FX Entertainment president Nick Grad praising Hunnam's "bold and entertaining vision" in bringing the cast back together in fictionalised versions of themselves.
The announcement also places the project within Hunnam's busier schedule, following his Emmy-nominated turn in Monster: The Ed Gein Story and while he is filming the BBC's adaptation of John le Carré's Legacy of Spies. Legends will reunite Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi, with more casting to follow. The original Sons of Anarchy ran for 92 episodes across seven seasons (2008-14) as FX's highest-rated series at the time, and previously spawned the spinoff Mayans M.C., which starred J.D. Pardo and ran for five seasons before ending in 2023.

New here? Start with this
Since the Sons of Anarchy ran on FX for seven seasons (2008–2014) and became the network's most-watched drama, following a fictional outlaw motorcycle club in California. Nearly all its central characters died by the end of the story, which is why a straightforward continuation was never really an option.
Legends gets round that problem with an unusual conceit: rather than reprising their old characters, the original actors play fictionalised versions of themselves who run into a real threat at a fan convention. Charlie Hunnam, who played the show's lead, is behind the new project as executive producer and co-developer, working with Jonathan Groff, and much of the original ensemble – including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal and Tommy Flanagan – is set to return in this new format.
The series matters to fans because it offers a way of reuniting a beloved cast without contradicting how their characters' stories ended. It is being made for FX and Hulu, though notably without Kurt Sutter, who created the original Sons of Anarchy.
