## Key points

- Layden favours a handheld-focused next generation.
- Supporting a console and handheld can split resources.
- Sony’s PS6 hardware plans remain uncertain.

## Summary

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says Sony could have a good chance of succeeding with a PS6 handheld, but believes launching it alongside a home console would risk dividing the company’s focus. His comments matter as speculation continues that Sony’s next hardware generation may include both devices.

Drawing on his experience with the PSP and PS Vita launches, Layden said supporting a handheld and console at once required what felt like “two companies”. He recalled handheld marketing being overshadowed by the higher-priced console, and said Sony should concentrate on one platform at a time; he also cited development and marketing resources as concerns.
