South African airline Airlink has cancelled a planned repeat of a low-altitude flypast over a stadium in Soweto after its earlier stunt during a Springboks-All Blacks test in Cape Town sparked controversy. The original manoeuvre, in which two aircraft flew in tight formation just metres above the packed DHL Stadium, drew both criticism for being reckless and praise for its precision, prompting the country's aviation regulator, SACAA, to launch a further investigation despite having initially approved the flight.

SACAA said that although Airlink had followed all correct procedures for last Saturday's display, it has since obtained flight data recordings and other information for additional analysis. Flightradar24 calculated that the lead aircraft passed less than 50ft (15m) above the stadium roof, and the airline maintains the flight kept to approved safety altitudes and speeds with an experienced crew. The cancelled flyby had been due to take place this weekend over the Soweto stadium hosting the deciding third test between South Africa and New Zealand; Airlink has not commented on the cancellation, though such flypasts have long featured at major South African sporting and presidential events.
