‘Spa Weekend’ Review: Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher Go Underserved in a Lukewarm Bath of a Comedy

The Hollywood Reporter · 2 hours ago

The Hollywood Reporter has published a lukewarm review of "Spa Weekend," a new R-rated comedy from writer-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, criticising it for wasting a talented cast on tepid material. Critic Angie Han argues the film aims for the "hijinks plus heartfelt emotion plus beloved cast" formula that made films like Bridesmaids and Girls Trip successful, but ends up feeling tame, shallow and underwhelming despite its likeable stars.

The film follows overworked Los Angeles lawyer Jane (Leslie Mann), who books a two-night wellness retreat with childhood friends Sophie (Anna Faris) and Coco (Michelle Buteau) to escape their overloaded lives as working mothers. Also starring Isla Fisher, the film was shot in Australia but set in an unspecified location resembling Malibu, and is rated R with a runtime of one hour 37 minutes; it was released on Friday, 21 August. The review is critical of how quickly and glibly the characters abandon their earlier reluctance to prioritise themselves, suggesting the script undercuts the sincerity of their struggles.
