"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has expanded its record-breaking debut into a global milestone, taking $932 million worldwide in its first three days, the second-biggest opening weekend ever after "Avengers: Endgame's" $1.2 billion. The film's $360 million domestic haul already stands as the biggest opening weekend in box office history, beating the $357 million "Endgame" took in 2019, and Sony says the film is now on course to pass $2 billion globally, a mark reached by only seven films to date.

The Tom Holland-led sequel, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and picking up after "No Way Home", also set records for the biggest single day ($169.8 million) and largest preview takings ($72 million). It is only the second film to cross $300 million domestically in a single weekend, with "No Way Home" ($260 million) and "Avengers: Infinity War" ($257 million) roughly $100 million behind in third and fourth place; Sony chairman Tom Rothman credited the cast, crew and marketing campaign for the result, while noting that "records are made to be broken."

Marvel's Spider-Man films, made by Sony but set within the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, have long been box office heavyweights, with Tom Holland starring as the character since 2017. "Brand New Day" is the latest instalment, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and following on from 2021's "No Way Home". Box office takings, particularly a film's opening weekend, are widely used across the industry as a measure of a film's commercial success and cultural reach.

"Avengers: Endgame", released in 2019, had held the record for the biggest opening weekend in box office history, taking in roughly $357 million domestically. That film brought together the Avengers superhero team in a story that concluded more than a decade of interlinked Marvel releases, making it a natural high-water mark against which later films are measured.

Sony is the studio behind the new Spider-Man film, while Tom Rothman serves as its chairman. Domestic box office figures refer to takings in the United States and Canada, separate from global totals, and comparisons between films are commonly made using both figures to gauge overall performance.
