The writers of Spider-Man: Brand New Day have said that Jean Grey does not “technically” kill anyone during the film, despite scenes in which she appears to endanger civilians while terrorising New York. Their comments address fan criticism that the character’s eventual redemption feels difficult to reconcile with the destruction and violence associated with her actions.

Erik Sommers said the film leaves an impression of major mayhem but does not explicitly confirm any deaths, arguing that Jean needed to seem formidable enough to challenge Spider-Man and initially justify the Department of Damage Control’s response. Co-writer Chris McKenna said the character was deliberately kept mysterious from Peter Parker’s perspective; Sadie Sink is expected to have a continuing MCU role, potentially including 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
