Spider-Man’s Next Move? Sony’s Tom Rothman on Tom Holland’s Future, ‘Jumanji’ and Beatles
Sony Pictures is riding high after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, posted the biggest North American opening weekend ever with $360 million, overtaking 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony chief Tom Rothman discussed the studio's future plans, including the prospects of Holland returning for a fifth Spider-Man film and the strategic thinking that shaped the latest instalment's success, while also teasing upcoming projects such as Jumanji: Open World and Sony's Beatles biopics.
Rothman said there have been no concrete talks about a fifth Spider-Man film with Holland, only "aspirational" ones, though he was thrilled to hear Holland express openness to returning. He credited the nearly five-year gap since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.9 billion globally, with building anticipation for Brand New Day, and said the team deliberately chose to go "deeper" emotionally rather than bigger in scale. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, the film follows Spider-Man confronting an invisible new foe. Sony's upcoming slate includes Insidious: Out of the Further, Resident Evil, The Social Reckoning, and Jumanji: Open World with Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart, due at Christmas, alongside Beatles biopics featuring Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney.
