Spinoff ‘Soulm8te’ Headed Straight to Home Video After ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Bombed
Universal has removed the M3GAN spinoff Soulm8te from its theatrical release schedule, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster will instead send the AI sci-fi thriller straight to home video. Directed and co-written by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), the film will launch exclusively on digital platforms from 1 August through a deal with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The move follows the disappointing box-office performance of M3GAN 2.0, which underperformed sharply the previous summer.
M3GAN 2.0 grossed $39.1 million globally, well below the $180 million taken by Gerard Johnstone's original 2023 hit M3GAN. Soulm8te stars Lily Sullivan as an AI-powered companion hired by a grieving man played by David Rysdahl, with a supporting cast including Claudia Doumit and Arty Froushan; the script is drawn from a story credited to James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Rafael Jordan. Producer Jason Blum praised Dolan for blending "tech paranoia with erotic thriller", while Dolan described the film as a satirical, "unhinged" work best enjoyed at home with friends, comparing the experience to watching Basic Instinct or Showgirls.
- M3GAN spinoff Soulm8te skips cinemas for a digital release on 1 August.
- Decision follows M3GAN 2.0's weak $39.1m global box office.
- Kate Dolan directs; Lily Sullivan stars as an AI companion.
