## Key points

- Huckabee called critics of US action against Iran spiritually blinded.
- Conservative commentators criticised his remarks.
- He made the comments in an interview about European governments.

## Summary

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has faced criticism after describing opposition to US military action against Iran as “spiritual darkness” and saying Satan had blinded its critics. His comments, made in an interview, drew backlash from conservative commentators, some of whom called for his removal as a diplomat.

The remarks came during a live interview with Israeli commentator Amir Tsarfati on The Anchor Podcast, published on 23 October by Behold Israel. Asked whether European governments’ attitude to US action reflected a mental or spiritual issue, Huckabee said he believed it was spiritual and suggested there were deeper causes than geopolitics.
