Indie rock band Spoon headlined New York City's SummerStage concert series in Central Park on Wednesday 8 July, in a show that also marked the series' 40th anniversary. The set's standout moment came when Spoon invited The Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser onstage for two songs, including a loose, freewheeling cover of Larry Williams' 1957 rock classic "Bony Maronie" — an unusually playful turn for the normally art-rock-leaning Austin band.

The night, which also fell during anniversaries for Spoon (30 years since debut Telephono and 25 since Girls Can Tell), featured frontman Britt Daniel teasing that the band had been working on a new record. Alongside the Leithauser collaboration on "Do You" and "Bony Maronie", Spoon played a second cover more in keeping with their sound — David Bowie's "I Can't Give Everything Away" from Blackstar — plus tracks such as "The Hardest Cut", "Out Go the Lights" and "Take a Walk". Opening acts Bodega and Ratboys warmed up the crowd, with Daniel himself joining Bodega to sing "The Fitted Shirt".
