Amélia Jones, 14, died after collapsing at Grampound Road Cricket Club near St Austell, Cornwall, and was taken to hospital by air ambulance last Thursday evening. The club said the death was believed to have resulted from a medical incident unrelated to cricket, while tributes have highlighted the loss felt by her family, friends and local sporting community.

Jones was a keen netball and cricket player who captained Cornwall’s under-14 girls’ side against Glamorgan a week before her death. Her family described her as talented and academically gifted; she was preparing for Grade 8 piano and Grade 5 clarinet exams and was supported to take extra GCSEs. A fundraiser set up by her uncle had raised more than £19,000, and her organs were donated to help other families.
