Spotify expands its share buyback program by $1.5B, raising total authorization to around $2.2B

Spotify has expanded its share buyback programme by $1.5 billion, lifting its total repurchase authorisation to roughly $2.223 billion. The move, approved by Spotify's Board of Directors and confirmed in a press release on Thursday, comes as the streaming giant reported strong quarterly growth and follows a wider trend of music industry players returning capital to shareholders, including rival Universal Music Group.

Spotify had $723 million remaining under its existing programme, which was first launched in 2021 with authorisation of up to $1 billion and topped up by a further $1 billion in July 2025. The company has discretion over the timing and scale of purchases, which depend on factors such as share price and market conditions. The announcement follows a strong second quarter for Spotify, which grew its Premium subscriber base to 300 million and now counts 777 million monthly active users across 184 markets, alongside quarterly revenue of €4.777 billion, up 14% year-on-year, and operating income of €655 million.
